Chapter Thirteen
Adriella tossed and turned on the ground as strange images entered her mind. She stood on the beach, gazing into the waves crashing into the shore. The saltwater was strong on her lips and she felt herself drawing closer toward the waves.
“Adriella,” a voice called in the distance. No, it wasn’t in the distance—it was from deep within the ocean. Adriella strained her ears. How was it possible for someone to be calling her from underwater?
“Adriella.” The voice was female and familiar, but she couldn’t place it. As she stared at the water, trying to determine if someone was lost in there, the voice grew weaker, as though the person was minutes away from death.
Adriella opened her mouth to call back, but no sounds escaped her lips. No! her thoughts yelled. Before she could stop herself, she jumped into the water, swimming toward the voice that sounded like echoes now. I will find you, she wished she could reassure the voice.
As she swam, the voice suddenly stopped shouting. Adriella’s head whipped from left to right. Had the person died? No. She promised her she’d save her. But how could she do such a thing when she didn’t know where the person was? The ocean was so vast it was impossible to find her.
She heard laughter in the distance. It wasn’t the kind of laughter she’d been used to hearing from Edward. This laughter caused the hairs at the back of her neck to stand up, as well as a chill to race down her spine. Like the voice, there was something familiar about this laughter.
She was about to turn around and flee back to the shore when a face appeared before her eyes. It was female, with silver hair, purple eyes, and green tentacles. She had a wicked gleam in her eyes.
“Five days left,” she snarled, her mouth curling into an evil grin. “Five days.”
Blood sped through Adriella’s body and she waved her hands around, propelling herself deeper into the water. The woman continued to laugh, the sound so strong as though it came from well inside her.
Adriella swam and swam. It shouldn’t have been possible for her to breathe underwater, yet she did, as though she had gills instead of lungs.
“Adriella!” There was that voice again.
“Mother?” she found herself saying as her eyes ravaged the area. There was no response. Quickly, Adriella swam toward the direction the voice had come from. She passed many fish, none of which paid her any attention.
“Adriella!”
She entered a cave and rushed toward the voice. When she came face to face with the woman at last, she discovered that it was in fact her mother. She was bound at the floor of the cave, flailing as she tried to free herself.
Adriella rushed to her side. “Mother!”
Queen Ryna looked up, and when she saw it was her daughter, she heaved a sigh of relief. “Adriella.”
The young princess tugged on the rope, but it wouldn’t budge. “I can’t free you!” She glanced around, searching for something—anything—that would tear the rope.
